Helping Haitians help themselves

Healing Hands for Haiti is committed to providing physical medicine and rehabilitation education and training programs to Haitians students and health care workers to help enable a fully independent self-sufficient Haitian health care system.

In the past 10 years more than 100 Haitian therapists have been trained and employed in Haiti as a result of the efforts of our volunteer teachers.
These are some of the training programs we support towards that goal:

Preventive and Public Health Education

This program provides preventive and public health education to patients and families about the major causes of amputations and other rehabilitation disorders. It will include personal instruction by a nurse educator, along with written and video materials in the following subjects:

  • Burns
  • Infections
  • Wound care
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Stroke

Rehabilitation Technician I Education
This program provides two 6-month classes per year for the purposes of training Haitian students at the aid level in physical, occupational, and nursing care therapies.

Rehabilitation Technician II Education
This program will be taught over a period of two years. It is to train Haitian students at the Rehabilitation Assistant level in providing physical, occupational, and speech therapy, and nursing cares.

Prosthetic Education
This program will train Haitian students who have completed the Technician I program. They will complete additional on the job training with a licensed prosthetist in the United States for six months. The student will receive additional on the job training from licensed prosthetists who are assigned to Healing Hands For Haiti medical teams over a period of two years.

Continued Medical Education (CME)
This program will provide four training courses per year to Haitian medical professionals with continuing medical education and to promote rehabilitation medicine at a level of expertise not currently obtainable in Haiti.
